Aglaonema commutatum, commonly known as Chinese Evergreen, is a popular houseplant known for its striking foliage and easy care. The 'Red Mushroom' variety is particularly admired for its vibrant red and pink leaves, which can add a pop of colour to any indoor space.

  • Foliage: The leaves of 'Red Mushroom' are its main attraction. They are typically lance-shaped and display a blend of red, pink, and green colours. The vibrant red and pink hues are often more prominent towards the center of the leaves, creating a beautiful contrast with the green edges.
  • Size: It generally grows to a height of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) and has a bushy, compact growth habit, making it suitable for various indoor spaces.

Care Requirements

  • Low to Medium Light: Aglaonema 'Red Mushroom' can tolerate low light conditions but thrives in medium, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their vibrant colours.

  • Moderate Watering: Water the plant when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure the soil remains slightly moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Water Quality: Use room temperature water and, if possible, distilled or rainwater to avoid the buildup of minerals from tap water.

  • Average to High Humidity: This plant appreciates higher humidity levels but can adapt to average indoor humidity. If the air is particularly dry, consider misting the plant or using a humidifier.

  • Warm Conditions: Ideal temperature range is between (18-27°C). Keep the plant away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Well-Draining Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend designed for houseplants or a mix of peat, perlite, and vermiculite.

  • Balanced Fertilizer: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter months.

Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Minimal Pruning: Prune any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance. Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears.
  • Cleaning Leaves: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them looking their best.

  • Repotting Frequency: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the current one.
