Description
Alocasia baginda ‘Dragon Scale’ is a standout foliage cultivar prized for its heavily textured, scale-like leaves that resemble reptilian skin. The foliage is thick and almost rigid, with a silvery-green surface contrasted by deep, dark green primary and secondary veins. As the plant matures, the leaves develop increased texture and depth, enhancing the “armoured” appearance. The undersides typically display a pale green tone, sometimes with a slight purple hue. Compact and sculptural, this cultivar is one of the most recognisable and commercially successful Alocasia selections.

Care Plan

Light
Bright, indirect light is optimal. It can tolerate medium light, but growth will slow and leaf definition may reduce. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch and fade the foliage.

Temperature
Ideal range is 20–28°C. Sensitive to cold; avoid temperatures below 16°C. Stable warmth is key to consistent growth.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity (60–80%). While more tolerant than some velvet types, low humidity can still lead to browning edges and reduced leaf quality.

Watering
Water when the top 2–4 cm of the substrate begins to dry. Keep the mix lightly moist but never waterlogged. Good drainage is critical to prevent corm rot.

Substrate
Use a well-aerated, free-draining aroid mix. Suitable components include orchid bark, perlite, coco coir or peat, and charcoal. The root system benefits from high oxygen availability.

Fertilising
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding in cooler months.

Growth Habit
A compact, clumping plant growing from a corm. Typically maintains a manageable size, making it suitable for indoor environments and smaller pots.

Repotting
Repot every 1–2 years or when root-bound. Avoid oversized pots, as excess substrate can retain too much moisture.
