Alocasia 'Batwing' is a striking and dramatic plant known for its large, arrowhead-shaped leaves with deep, dark green to almost black coloration. The leaves are often ruffled and have prominent veins that add to their exotic appearance, resembling the wings of a bat, hence the name. The plant has a strong, upright growth habit, making it a stunning centerpiece in any indoor or outdoor garden.

Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies.  The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.

1. Light:

  • Bright, Indirect Light: Alocasia Batwing thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light may cause the plant to become leggy and lose its vibrant colour. Place it near an east or west-facing window with filtered light.

2. Watering:

  • Consistent Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the roots. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom, which can cause root rot.

3. Humidity:

  • High Humidity: Alocasia Batwing prefers a humid environment. Aim for a humidity level of 60-80%. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.

4. Temperature:

  • Warm Temperatures: This plant thrives in temperatures between 18-27°C Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 15°C or cold drafts, as this can stress the plant and stunt its growth.

5. Soil:

  • Well-Draining, Rich Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix with a high organic matter content. A mix designed for tropical plants or one containing peat, perlite, and orchid bark works well.

6. Fertilisation:

  • Regular Feeding: Feed your Alocasia Batwing every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
