Alocasia macrorrhizos Variegata - Bare Bottom Baby
Alocasia macrorrhizos Variegata, often called the Variegated Giant Taro or Elephant Ear, is a striking tropical plant known for its large, arrow-shaped leaves adorned with bold, irregular white or cream variegation. The foliage can grow to impressive sizes, often measuring up to 1 metre in length, giving the plant a dramatic, architectural presence. Each leaf's variegation is unique, with streaks, patches, and swirls of white that contrast beautifully against the deep green of the leaf. Its thick, sturdy stems help support the massive leaves, making it a favourite among collectors of statement plants. This variety of Alocasia, like its green counterpart, thrives in tropical and subtropical environments and can also adapt well to indoor conditions.
Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies. The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.
Care Plan:
Light:
- Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some filtered direct sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the variegated leaves.
- Low light may reduce variegation, so ensure it gets sufficient bright light.
Watering:
- Water consistently to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 2-3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.
- Reduce watering frequency in cooler months when the plant’s growth slows down.
- Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, as this can lead to root rot.
Humidity:
- Alocasias thrive in high humidity, ideally above 60%. If your home is dry, consider misting the plant regularly or using a humidifier.
- Grouping the plant with others or placing it on a pebble tray can help increase humidity levels.
Temperature:
- Keep the plant in warm temperatures between 18°C to 27°C. Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 15°C, as it is sensitive to cold.
Soil:
- Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix containing peat, perlite, and orchid bark. This helps with aeration and prevents the soil from becoming too compact or waterlogged.
Fertilising:
- Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
