Description
Alocasia reginula ‘Ninja’ is a compact, collector-grade selection within the reginula complex, closely related to forms like Black Velvet but distinguished by its darker, more subdued foliage and refined venation. The leaves are thick, velvety, and almost black-green, with a matte finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. Veining is present but less contrasting than typical reginula forms, giving the plant a stealthy, uniform appearance—hence the name ‘Ninja’. Its compact size and tight growth habit make it ideal for small spaces or controlled environments.

Care Plan

Light
Bright, indirect light is essential. Too little light results in smaller leaves and slower growth. Avoid direct sunlight, which can damage the velvet texture.

Temperature
Prefers stable temperatures between 20–28°C. Avoid drops below 16°C, as this can trigger stress or dormancy.

Humidity
Requires elevated humidity, ideally 65–80%. Lower humidity can lead to crisping leaf edges and reduced leaf lifespan. Performs best in cabinets or greenhouse-style setups.

Watering
Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist. Allow the top 2–3 cm to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as the corm is highly susceptible to rot.

Substrate
Use a very well-draining, aerated aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and a small amount of sphagnum moss is ideal. Airflow around the roots is critical.

Fertilising
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding in cooler months or when growth slows.

Growth Habit
A small, clumping Alocasia growing from a corm. Typically holds only a few leaves at a time, cycling older leaves as new ones emerge.

Repotting
Repot sparingly, only when root-bound or when the substrate has broken down. Prefers a slightly snug pot and can react poorly to excessive disturbance.
