Anthurium andraeanum, commonly known as the Flamingo Flower, is a striking tropical plant prized for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant spathes that come in various shades, most commonly red, pink, or white. The spathe is often mistaken for a flower, but it is actually a modified leaf that surrounds the plant's true flowers, which are tiny and form on the spadix. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, the Flamingo Flower is a popular choice for adding a touch of exotic beauty to indoor spaces.

Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies.  The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.

Care Plan for Anthurium andraeanum (Flamingo Flower)

  1. Light:

    • Provide bright, indirect light to keep the plant healthy and encourage blooming. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while low light may reduce flower production. A location near an east or north-facing window is ideal.
  2. Watering:

    • Water the plant thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Anthuriums prefer consistently moist soil but are sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. Use lukewarm water, as cold water can shock the roots.
  3. Humidity:

    • Flamingo Flowers thrive in high humidity environments. Aim for a humidity level of 60-80%. If your indoor air is dry, increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, placing it on a humidity tray, or using a humidifier.
  4. Temperature:

    • Keep the plant in a warm environment with temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts or temperatures below 15°C, as this can stress the plant and hinder growth.
  5. Soil:

    • Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix designed for orchids or a combination of peat, perlite, and pine bark works well, as it provides the aeration and moisture retention that Anthuriums need.
  6. Fertiliser:

    • Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in autumn and winter. A fertiliser with a higher phosphorus content can promote flowering.
