Adenium obesum Desert Rose 'pretty pink'
Adenium obesum, commonly known as the Desert Rose, is a stunning, succulent shrub native to the semi-arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It features a unique, bulbous caudex (swollen base), which stores water, allowing it to thrive in dry conditions. The plant produces clusters of vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, white, or a combination thereof, often blooming during warmer months. Its thick, fleshy stems and leathery, dark green leaves contribute to its striking appearance, making it a popular choice for bonsai, potted plants, or landscape specimens.
The Desert Rose can grow up to 1.5 metres tall and develops a visually appealing, almost sculptural form. Its flowers provide a tropical flair, contrasting beautifully with the plant’s hardy, drought-tolerant nature.
1. Light Requirements:
- Full Sun: The Desert Rose thrives in bright, direct sunlight. Ensure it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, especially during its growing and blooming season. Place the plant in a sunny spot outdoors or in a well-lit indoor space near a window.
2. Watering:
- Low to Moderate: Adenium obesum is drought-tolerant, so it prefers infrequent watering. Water deeply when the soil is dry, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant enters dormancy.
- Watering Tips: Water the soil directly, avoiding the plant’s caudex and leaves to prevent rot and fungal diseases.
3. Soil:
- Well-Draining: The Desert Rose requires a fast-draining, sandy or gritty soil mix to prevent water retention around its roots. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal. You can also create a custom mix by combining potting soil with perlite or coarse sand for better drainage.
4. Temperature:
- Warm Conditions: Adenium obesum thrives in temperatures between 20°C and 35°C Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, as it is sensitive to frost. During winter, keep it in a warm, sheltered spot if grown outdoors.
5. Fertilising:
- Balanced Fertiliser: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks. Dilute the fertiliser to half strength to avoid overfeeding. No fertilising is needed during dormancy in winter.
6. Pruning:
- Shape and Health: Prune the Desert Rose to maintain its desired shape and to encourage new growth and flowering. Remove dead or damaged stems and leaves regularly. Pruning should be done in early spring before the growing season begins.
