Description

Alocasia  ‘Polly’ is a dwarf selection of the hybrid often referred to as African Mask plant. It features sharply arrow-shaped leaves with deep lobing, a glossy dark green surface, and striking silvery-white veins. The leaf margins are slightly undulated, adding extra texture and visual interest.

The undersides of the leaves are typically a muted purple-green, and the plant maintains a tight, clumping growth habit, rarely exceeding 30–50 cm in height. Its compact size and strong contrast make it a reliable retail performer, especially for indoor plant buyers wanting something “exotic” without the space requirements of larger Alocasias.

Care Plan

Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too little light leads to leggy growth and smaller leaves; direct harsh sun can scorch foliage.

Watering
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry slightly between watering. Very sensitive to overwatering—root rot is a common issue.

Humidity
Prefers high humidity (60%+). Will struggle in dry indoor environments, often showing browning edges or crisping.

Temperature
Best kept between 18–27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts.

Soil
Free-draining aroid mix is essential (bark, perlite, coco peat). Needs airflow around the roots to prevent rot.

Fertiliser
Feed during active growth with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks at reduced strength.

Growth Habit
Compact and clumping. Produces leaves from a central base rather than spreading widely.
