Alocasia ‘Loco’- Bare Bottom Baby
Description
Alocasia ‘Loco’ is a highly sought-after tropical foliage plant admired for its heavily textured, metallic-looking leaves and compact growth habit. PARENTAGE: Likely a somaclonal mutation of Alocasia 'Mandalay', which is itself a mutation of Alocasia 'Polly' (A. sanderiana x A. longiloba 'Watsoniana') this striking plant features thick, bullate foliage with deep veining and an almost sculptural appearance. The leaves display rich green to blue-green tones with a subtle silver sheen, while the undersides often carry hints of burgundy or purple.
Its unusual leaf texture and dramatic form make Alocasia ‘Loco’ an excellent statement plant for indoor collections, shaded patios, and tropical-style displays. Due to its compact size and distinctive foliage, it is particularly popular among rare plant collectors.
Care Plan
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct afternoon sun, as this may scorch the foliage. Morning sunlight or filtered light through curtains is ideal. Lower light conditions may slow growth and reduce leaf size.
Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf curling or browning.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels above 60%. Increased humidity helps maintain healthy foliage and reduces the likelihood of crispy leaf edges. Ideal for bathrooms, humidified rooms, or grouped with other tropical plants.
Temperature
Prefers warm conditions between 18°C and 28°C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C.
Soil
Requires a well-draining, chunky aroid mix rich in organic matter. A blend containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and premium potting mix works well to provide both moisture retention and aeration.
Fertilising
Feed regularly during the active growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength every 2–4 weeks. Reduce or cease fertilising during winter.
Growth Habit
A compact, upright-growing tropical plant with thick stems and dramatic textured foliage. Typically remains smaller than many other Alocasia varieties, making it suitable for indoor growing and smaller spaces.
