Alocasia Odora 'California Aurea Variegata'
Description:
Alocasia odora ‘California Aurea Variegata’ is a striking cultivar known for its bold, upright growth and dramatic chartreuse-to-golden variegation splashed across its lush, broad leaves. This variety maintains the impressive stature of Alocasia odora, with thick stems and elephant ear-shaped foliage that can reach impressive sizes under ideal conditions. The aurea (yellow) variegation is often marbled or sectoral, making each leaf a unique showpiece. This plant brings a tropical statement to any collection and thrives best when given space and bright, filtered light.
Care Plan:
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, but ensure it receives ample brightness to maintain vivid variegation.
Water:
Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Alocasia prefer evenly moist soil, but they do not tolerate soggy conditions—ensure excellent drainage.
Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity (60%+). Regular misting, a humidifier, or grouping with other plants can help maintain adequate moisture in the air.
Temperature:
Prefers warm conditions between 18–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 12°C.
Soil:
Use a chunky, well-draining potting mix. A mix containing perlite, orchid bark, and premium indoor plant soil works well.
Fertiliser:
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in cooler months.
Growth Habit:
Alocasia odora ‘California Aurea Variegata’ can reach 1–1.5 metres in height. It may go dormant in winter, especially in cooler climates—reduce watering and resume normal care when new growth appears.
