Alocasia lauterbachiana Purple Sword
Description
Alocasia lauterbachiana features long, slender, deeply serrated leaves that grow vertically, giving it a very sculptural, almost palm-like presence. The upper leaf surface is deep green, while the undersides display rich purple tones, which become more prominent as the plant matures. Unlike broader-leaf Alocasias, this species has a more open, airy habit, making it ideal for adding height and structure without bulk.
It tends to be faster growing than many Alocasias under the right conditions and can reach impressive heights indoors or in tropical outdoor settings.
Care Plan
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some gentle morning sun, but harsh direct light will scorch the narrow leaves.
Watering
Keep soil consistently lightly moist, but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Sensitive to both overwatering and drying out completely.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity (60%+). Lower humidity can lead to browning edges and slower growth.
Temperature
Ideal range is 18–28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Soil
Use a well-draining aroid mix (e.g. bark, perlite, coco peat). Good aeration is essential to prevent root rot.
Fertiliser
Feed regularly during active growth (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks.
Growth Habit
Upright and vertical. Can become tall rather than wide, making it suitable for tighter spaces.
