Alocasia macrorrhizos
Alocasia macrorrhizos
Description:
Alocasia macrorrhizos, commonly known as Giant Taro or Elephant Ear, is a striking tropical plant renowned for its enormous, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves that can reach over a metre in length in ideal conditions. It produces thick, upright stems and a strong, architectural presence, making it a favourite for tropical gardens or large indoor spaces. This plant thrives in warm, humid environments and can tolerate partial shade, though it performs best in bright, indirect light.
Care Plan:
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate some shade but avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season (spring and summer), but allow the top 2–3 cm to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier for optimal growth.
Soil: Use a well-draining, rich potting mix. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well.
Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 20–30°C. Protect from temperatures below 15°C.
Fertiliser: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce feeding in winter.
