Alocasia macrorrhizos Black Stem - Bare Bottom Baby
Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Black Stem', also known as Giant Taro or Elephant Ear, is a striking plant distinguished by its dark, almost black stems and large, arrow-shaped, glossy green leaves. This variety offers a bold architectural statement in both indoor and outdoor tropical settings. It’s a fast-growing plant that can reach impressive heights if given the right conditions.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels but will grow more slowly. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering slightly in the colder months when the plant's growth slows.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (above 60%). Misting the plant or placing it near a humidifier can help replicate its natural tropical environment.
- Temperature: Optimal temperature range is 18–30°C. Avoid temperatures below 10°C, as the plant is sensitive to cold.
- Soil: Requires well-draining, rich potting soil. A mix of peat, perlite, and compost works well to ensure aeration and drainage.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilisation in autumn and winter.
- Repotting: Repot when it outgrows its pot, typically every 1–2 years. Use a larger pot to allow for growth, as Alocasia macrorrhizos tends to expand quickly.
