Description

Alocasia 'Nairobi Night' Variegated is a striking and uncommon cultivar celebrated for its deep, moody foliage accented with dramatic variegation. The base colour of the leaves is a rich  green contrasting beautifully with splashes and marbling of cream, white, and sometimes pale lime. The leaves are arrow- or shield-shaped with prominent veins, and the plant itself maintains a strong upright form.

This variety combines the elegance of a tropical showpiece with the intrigue of unpredictable variegation, making it a collector’s favourite. Its bold presence works well as a statement piece indoors or in a warm, sheltered outdoor area.

Care Plan

Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal to maintain vibrant variegation. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the leaves, but ensure it gets enough light to prevent the variegated areas from reverting or fading.

Water:
Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage.

Humidity:
Prefers high humidity (60%+). Mist regularly or place near a humidifier, especially in drier months or climates.

Temperature:
Thrives in warm conditions between 18–28°C. Protect from drafts and cold—avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C.

Soil:
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. A combination of premium potting mix, perlite, orchid bark, and a little coco coir or peat moss works well.

Fertiliser:
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Hold off in winter when growth slows.

Repotting:
Repot every 1–2 years or when roots become crowded. Spring is the best time to repot.
