Alocasia reginula Black Velvet
Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’
Description:
Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’ is a compact, highly ornamental species prized for its striking dark foliage and velvety texture. The deep green to nearly black leaves are accentuated by contrasting silver veins, creating a dramatic and luxurious appearance. Despite its exotic look, ‘Black Velvet’ remains relatively small, making it an excellent choice for indoor collections and terrariums. This species thrives in controlled conditions and requires attentive care to maintain its signature velvety leaves.
Care Plan
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light conditions but may experience slower growth. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate foliage.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top two to three centimetres of soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in cooler months to prevent root rot.
Humidity: Requires high humidity levels of at least 60 percent. Using a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting can help maintain optimal conditions.
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Soil: Prefers a well-draining, airy mix that retains moisture without becoming compacted. A combination of peat, perlite, and orchid bark works well.
Fertiliser: Apply a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause leaf burn.
