Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet Variegata’ is a captivating, rare variety of Alocasia reginula, known for its lush, velvety foliage. The leaves are a deep, almost black-green with striking, creamy Pink, White or Yellow variegation that appears in unique patterns on each leaf. The contrasting colours and thick, heart-shaped leaves with prominent, silver-white veins make this plant a stunning focal point. Compact and slow-growing, this Alocasia is perfect for indoor collections, particularly for those who appreciate exotic foliage.

Care Plan

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can damage its delicate, variegated leaves. Too little light, however, may reduce the intensity of the variegation.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18–27°C. Keep it away from temperatures below 15°C to prevent cold stress.

  • Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) is ideal for keeping its leaves healthy and vibrant. Regular misting or a nearby humidifier can help maintain the right environment, especially in drier seasons.

  • Watering: Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry before watering. This plant prefers consistent moisture without being waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so good drainage is essential.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, aerated potting mix, such as a blend of peat, perlite, and orchid bark. This ensures proper air circulation around the roots and prevents water buildup.

  • Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilising, which can damage the roots and leaves.

  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant has outgrown its pot, using fresh soil to support healthy root growth.
