Alocasia scalprum 'Samar Lance'
Description
Alocasia scalprum ‘Samar Lance’ is a striking and highly sought-after species native to Samar in the Philippines. It is best known for its elongated, lance-shaped foliage with a thick, almost succulent-like texture. The leaves emerge a rich deep green with a metallic sheen, developing a subtly bullate (quilted) surface as they mature. The narrow form and upright growth habit give it a refined, architectural appearance, making it an excellent choice for collectors and modern indoor plant displays.
Compared to broader-leaved Alocasias, ‘Samar Lance’ has a more compact and vertical profile, allowing it to fit comfortably into smaller spaces while still offering strong visual impact. Its unique foliage texture and shape distinguish it clearly from other species within the genus.
Care Plan
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It will tolerate medium light conditions, but growth may slow and leaf definition may reduce. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist but not wet. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering or consistently soggy soil can lead to root rot, while letting it dry out completely may cause stress and leaf loss.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity environments. Ideal humidity is above 60%. While it can adapt to average indoor conditions, increased humidity will support better leaf development and overall plant health.
Temperature
Prefers warm conditions between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 15°C, as this can slow growth or cause damage.
Soil
Requires a well-draining, airy mix. A blend containing orchid bark, perlite, and high-quality potting mix is ideal to allow oxygen flow to the roots while retaining sufficient moisture.
Fertilising
Feed regularly during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks. Reduce or stop feeding during cooler months when growth naturally slows.
