Philodendron serpens – Description

Philodendron serpens is a distinctive and highly sought-after climbing aroid, admired for its beautiful heart-shaped foliage and unusual, densely hairy petioles. Its most recognisable feature is the covering of fine, reddish-brown, bristle-like hairs along its leaf stalks, creating a fascinating texture that sets it apart from other Philodendrons.

Native to tropical regions of the Himalayas, including Nepal and northeastern India, Philodendron serpens naturally grows as a climbing plant in warm, humid forest environments. Its velvety-looking petioles contrast beautifully with its broad, rich green leaves, which become increasingly impressive as the plant matures.

This unique Philodendron is particularly prized by collectors for its unusual appearance and climbing growth habit. When provided with suitable support, consistent warmth and humidity, it can develop into a stunning tropical specimen.

Care Plan

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy foliage development.

  • Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may become slower.

Water

  • Water when the top 2–3 cm of potting mix begins to dry.

  • Prefers evenly moist conditions without becoming waterlogged.

  • Avoid allowing the growing medium to remain excessively wet, as this can encourage root rot.

  • Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows.

Humidity

  • Thrives in 60–80% humidity, similar to its natural tropical environment.

  • Higher humidity encourages healthy leaf development and helps prevent dry, crispy edges.

  • Ensure adequate airflow, particularly in enclosed growing environments.

Temperature

  • Ideal growing temperatures are 18–28°C.

  • Protect from temperatures below 15°C, particularly for extended periods.

  • Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations and cold draughts.

Soil

  • Requires a chunky, well-draining aroid potting mix that allows oxygen to reach the roots.

  • A combination of orchid bark, perlite, coco chips and quality potting mix is ideal.

  • The growing medium should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Fertiliser

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth.

  • Reduce fertilising during cooler months.

  • Avoid excessive fertiliser application, which may cause leaf damage or root stress.
