Alocasia zebrina ‘Reticulata’

Description

Alocasia zebrina ‘Reticulata’ is a striking cultivar distinguished by its dramatic, network-like venation across the leaf blade. Unlike standard Alocasia zebrina, which is primarily known for its zebra-striped petioles, ‘Reticulata’ features prominent pale to silvery veins that form a pronounced reticulated (netted) pattern over deep green foliage.

The leaves are sagittate (arrow-shaped) with a slightly elongated tip and a firm, semi-gloss texture. The petioles retain the characteristic banded pattern typical of A. zebrina, providing architectural contrast to the intricate venation above.

This cultivar has a strong upright growth habit and can reach approximately 60–90 cm in height under optimal indoor conditions. As with most Alocasias, it grows from a corm and may enter periods of semi-dormancy during cooler months.

It is best suited to collectors who can provide stable warmth, humidity and attentive watering practices.

Care Plan

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal.
Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the foliage and fade the venation contrast. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and reduced leaf size.

Temperature

Thrives between 18–28°C.
Avoid temperatures below 15°C, as growth will slow and stress symptoms may develop.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity (60% or higher).
Lower humidity can lead to browning leaf edges and reduced leaf expansion.

Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently moist but never waterlogged.
Allow the top 2–3 cm of substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering may cause corm rot, particularly in cooler conditions.

Potting Medium

Use a well-draining aroid mix containing components such as orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and quality potting substrate. Aeration is critical to prevent root and corm rot.

Fertiliser

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding during cooler months.

Growth Notes

  • May drop older leaves as new ones emerge — this is typical Alocasia behaviour.

  • Can produce offsets (cormlets) at the base over time.

  • Sensitive to sudden environmental changes.

With stable warmth, humidity and careful watering, Alocasia zebrina ‘Reticulata’ becomes a dramatic focal point in any tropical collection.
