Anthurium andraeanum – Flamingo Flower

Description
Anthurium andraeanum, commonly known as the Flamingo Flower, is a striking tropical aroid admired for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant, long-lasting spathes. These colourful spathes range from deep red to pink, coral, white, and even green tones, each surrounding a contrasting upright spadix. With its architectural foliage and elegant blooms, this species adds a refined, ornamental presence to interior spaces.

Flamingo Flowers are naturally found in the humid, shaded understories of Central and South American rainforests. Their growth habit is compact and upright, making them ideal feature plants for homes, offices, and interior plant displays. When given the right conditions, they can bloom year-round and maintain a consistent, lush form.

Care Plan – Anthurium andraeanum (Flamingo Flower)

Light
Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the foliage and fade the spathes. Low light reduces flowering.

Temperature
Maintain indoor temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Humidity
Prefers high humidity. Aim for 60% or higher where possible. Increase humidity through grouping plants, using a humidifier, or placing the pot on a pebble tray.

Watering
Water when the top 3–5 cm of the potting mix has dried. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Ensure excellent drainage, as Anthuriums are sensitive to root rot.

Potting Mix
Use a chunky, airy aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and high-quality peat or coco coir. The roots need airflow and do not tolerate compacted soil.

Fertiliser
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. Too much fertiliser can burn the roots or reduce flowering.
