Calathea lancifolia ‘Insignis’

Common Name: Rattlesnake Plant
Family: Marantaceae

Description:
Calathea lancifolia ‘Insignis’ is a striking foliage plant admired for its long, lance-shaped leaves with deep green, wavy edges and contrasting dark green oval markings. The undersides of the leaves are a rich purple, adding to its ornamental appeal. Native to Brazil, this variety is known for its bold patterns and rhythmic leaf movements—folding up slightly in low light as part of its natural nyctinastic (day-night) response.

Care Plan

Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Tolerates lower light but may slow growth and fade leaf markings.

Water:
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Use filtered or rainwater if possible, as Calatheas are sensitive to salts and chemicals in tap water.

Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity (above 60%). Regular misting, a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water will help maintain ideal conditions.

Temperature:
Ideal range is 18–27°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

Soil:
Use a well-draining, peat-based mix. A blend of potting mix, perlite, and coco coir or orchid bark works well.

Fertiliser:
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. Reduce or pause feeding in winter.

Repotting:
Repot every 1–2 years or when roots become crowded. Choose a pot one size up with good drainage.
