Calathea makoyana
Calathea makoyana
Description
Calathea makoyana, commonly known as the Peacock Plant, is a refined and elegant foliage species prized for its intricate leaf patterning. The thin, oval leaves display a pale green background marked with darker green feathered patterns that radiate from the central vein, resembling the eye of a peacock feather. The undersides of the foliage are a soft purple, which becomes visible as the plant moves.
This species has a light, airy growth habit compared to more compact Calatheas, with gently arching stems that create a layered, flowing appearance. Like other members of the group, it exhibits nyctinastic movement, with leaves subtly raising and lowering in response to daily light cycles. Its delicate texture and detailed patterning make it a standout choice for indoor collections and shaded spaces.
Care Plan
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium to lower light levels, though growth may slow and pattern clarity may soften. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the thin leaves.
Watering
Keep soil consistently lightly moist. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings, but do not let the plant dry out completely. Sensitive to water quality, it performs best with filtered or rainwater.
Humidity
Requires moderate to high humidity for best performance. Low humidity can lead to browning edges and curling leaves. Ideal conditions are above 60%.
Temperature
Prefers stable temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C, as this can cause stress and leaf damage.
Soil
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix. A blend of quality potting mix with perlite and fine bark works well to maintain even moisture while allowing airflow.
Fertilising
Feed during the growing season every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce feeding during cooler months when growth slows.
