Calathea roseopicta Dottie
Calathea roseopicta ‘Dottie’
Description
Calathea roseopicta ‘Dottie’ is a bold and highly ornamental foliage plant, admired for its dramatic contrast and rich colouring. The leaves are nearly black to deep burgundy, overlaid with a vivid pink to rose-coloured outline and central markings that appear almost hand-painted. The undersides of the foliage carry a deep purple tone, enhancing its visual depth and intensity.
This variety maintains a compact, clumping growth habit, producing a dense display of rounded leaves held on upright stems. Like other Calatheas, it exhibits nyctinastic movement, gently raising and lowering its leaves in response to light changes throughout the day. ‘Dottie’ is particularly suited to indoor environments where its striking foliage can serve as a strong focal point.
Care Plan
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but colour intensity and growth may reduce. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can cause fading and leaf burn.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings, but do not let the plant dry out completely. Sensitive to water quality, it performs best with filtered or rainwater where possible.
Humidity
Requires moderate to high humidity to maintain optimal leaf condition. Low humidity may result in browning edges or reduced leaf quality. Ideal conditions are above 60%.
Temperature
Prefers stable temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C, as this can cause stress and leaf damage.
Soil
Use a well-draining but moisture-retentive mix. A combination of quality potting mix with added perlite and fine bark is suitable to maintain even moisture while allowing airflow.
Fertilising
Feed during the growing season every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce feeding during cooler months when growth slows.
