Calathea rotundifolia Fasciata
Calathea rotundifolia ‘Fasciata’
Description
Calathea rotundifolia ‘Fasciata’ is a bold and architectural foliage plant known for its large, rounded leaves and striking banded pattern. The foliage displays a soft mid-green base overlaid with broad, darker green stripes that radiate symmetrically from the central vein, creating a strong yet refined visual contrast. The undersides of the leaves are typically a muted purple, adding depth when viewed from different angles.
This variety forms a full, upright clump with substantial leaves held on sturdy petioles, giving it a more structured presence compared to finer-textured Calatheas. Like others in the group, it exhibits nyctinastic movement, gently shifting its leaves in response to light throughout the day. Its bold patterning and generous leaf size make it an excellent feature plant for interiors and shaded outdoor settings.
Care Plan
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate moderate light levels, though optimal pattern definition and growth occur with consistent filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf burn and fading.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings, but do not let the plant dry out completely. Sensitive to water quality, filtered or rainwater is preferred.
Humidity
Requires moderate to high humidity to maintain leaf quality. Low humidity may result in browning edges or curling. Ideal humidity levels are above 60%.
Temperature
Thrives in stable temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C, as this can stress the plant and slow growth.
Soil
Use a well-draining yet moisture-retentive mix. A combination of quality potting mix, perlite, and fine orchid bark will support healthy root development while maintaining consistent moisture.
Fertilising
Feed during the active growing season every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce feeding during cooler months when growth naturally slows.
