Calathea warscewiczii - Perfectly Imperfect Plants
Calathea warscewiczii
Common Name: Velvet Calathea or Jungle Velvet Calathea
Description:
Calathea warscewiczii is a stunning tropical foliage plant admired for its velvety, lance-shaped leaves. The rich, deep green upper surface is accented with lighter green feather-like patterns along the midrib, while the undersides reveal a striking deep purple tone. This plant brings a lush, luxurious feel to indoor spaces and is a favourite among collectors of prayer plants.
Native to Central America, it thrives in warm, humid environments. Like other Calatheas, it exhibits nyctinasty—its leaves gently fold up at night and reopen with the morning light, adding dynamic movement to your indoor jungle.
Care Plan for Calathea warscewiczii:
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn and fade its vibrant colours. Can tolerate lower light but may grow more slowly.
Water:
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. Use filtered or rainwater if possible, as it can be sensitive to salts and chemicals in tap water.
Humidity:
High humidity (above 60%) is essential for healthy growth. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or place the plant on a pebble tray to maintain moisture in the air.
Temperature:
Ideal range is 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and keep it away from heaters or air conditioners.
Soil:
Use a light, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and some orchid bark works well.
Fertiliser:
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leaf tip burn.
Repotting:
Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and encourage growth
