Description: Colocasia, commonly known as Elephant Ear, is a tropical plant known for its large, dramatic leaves and robust growth. Planting and caring for Colocasia from rhizomes can lead to a flourishing, visually striking plant. The rhizomes are underground stems that store nutrients and are the key to establishing a healthy Colocasia plant.

Care Plan:

  1. Planting Time: The best time to plant Colocasia rhizomes is in the spring or early summer when the risk of frost has passed, and soil temperatures are warming.

  2. Location: Choose a location that receives bright, indirect sunlight. Colocasia can tolerate full sun, but in hotter climates, some afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch.

  3. Soil Preparation: Plant rhizomes in a well-draining, rich soil that retains moisture but does not become waterlogged. A mix of potting soil, compost, and perlite or sand works well. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0).

  4. Planting:

    • Depth: Plant the rhizomes about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) deep. Ensure that the buds (or growing points) are facing upwards.
    • Spacing: Space the rhizomes about 30-45 cm (12-18 inches) apart to allow for their large leaves and vigorous growth.
    • Watering: Water the rhizomes thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
  5. Watering: Colocasia requires regular watering to keep the soil moist. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely. In hot weather, you might need to water more frequently. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

  6. Humidity: Colocasia thrives in high humidity. If growing indoors or in a dry climate, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a humidity tray. Regular misting can also help maintain adequate humidity.

  7. Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. Protect it from frost and cold temperatures, as they can damage the leaves and rhizomes.

  8. Fertilising: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when growth slows.

  9. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Mulch also helps suppress weeds.

  10. Repotting: If growing in a container, repot the Colocasia every 1-2 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) larger in diameter than the current one.

Love it!

I came across Colcasia’s by accident years ago but haven’t found anyone local or online that sells them until now. I’m a frequent customer of enliven so I knew I was in for a treat with this order and it did not disappoint! Beautiful plants, nice and healthy and a great selection, can’t recommend enough!
