Alocasia macrorrhizos Rainbow Ray
Description:
Alocasia macrorrhizos ‘Rainbow Ray’ is a spectacular variegated cultivar of the giant taro, featuring large, arrow-shaped leaves adorned with striking streaks of yellow, cream, and light green. The bold variegation patterns give the plant a radiant appearance, resembling sunbeams dancing across its foliage. Its robust growth habit and dramatic size make it a statement piece in any tropical garden or indoor collection. Like other Alocasias, ‘Rainbow Ray’ thrives in warm, humid conditions and requires proper care to maintain its vibrant colours.
Care Plan:
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its variegation. Some morning or late afternoon sun can enhance colour contrast, but avoid harsh midday sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out before watering again. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (above 60%) to thrive. If growing indoors, use a humidifier or place the plant near a pebble tray with water.
Temperature: Best suited for warm temperatures between 18–30°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C, as this can lead to dormancy.
Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky mix—combine peat, perlite, and orchid bark to ensure good aeration and moisture retention.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during the growing season. A higher nitrogen formula can promote lush foliage. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
