Description:
Alocasia melo ‘Rhino Skin’ Variegata is an extraordinary and highly sought-after foliage plant known for its deeply textured, leathery leaves and rare variegation. The dark bluish-green leaves are thick and rugged, resembling the hide of a rhinoceros—hence the nickname. What sets the variegated form apart is the stunning contrast of creamy white, mint, or pale yellow marbling that splashes across the dense, corrugated surface of each leaf. Compact and slow-growing, this Alocasia is a true collector’s specimen that brings a bold and sculptural presence to any indoor space.

Care Plan:

Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can cause leaf burn, while insufficient light may dull the variegation.

Water:
Allow the top few centimetres of the soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly but do not allow the plant to sit in soggy soil—root rot is a risk.

Humidity:
Requires high humidity (60–80%) to thrive. Use a humidifier or pebble tray, especially in drier indoor environments.

Temperature:
Keep in warm conditions between 18–28°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts.

Soil:
Use a well-aerated, fast-draining aroid mix. A combination of indoor potting mix, perlite, pumice, and orchid bark is ideal.

Fertiliser:
Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding during winter dormancy.

Growth Habit:
Compact with a clumping growth pattern. Alocasia melo is a slow grower, and the variegated form can be even more so—patience is key.
