Ctenanthe lubbersiana ‘Variegata’ — Description

Ctenanthe lubbersiana ‘Variegata’ is a stunning tropical foliage plant prized for its vibrant golden-yellow, creamy-white and deep green variegation. Its elongated, oval-shaped leaves display irregular splashes, streaks and marbled patterns, making each plant beautifully unique.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, this variety has an upright, bushy growth habit, producing elegant stems adorned with strikingly patterned foliage. Unlike some of its more delicate relatives, Ctenanthe lubbersiana is relatively resilient when provided with consistent warmth, moisture and humidity.

As the plant matures, it develops into a lush, tropical specimen, typically reaching 60–120 cm in height under favourable conditions. Its colourful foliage makes it an excellent choice for indoor collections, shaded patios and protected tropical gardens.

Care Plan

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain vibrant golden and cream variegation.

  • Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter sections of the foliage.

  • Tolerates moderate indirect light, although insufficient light may slow growth and reduce foliage vibrancy.

Watering

  • Water when the top 2–3 cm of the potting mix feels slightly dry.

  • Keep the soil consistently lightly moist but never waterlogged.

  • Avoid allowing the plant to dry out completely, as this can cause curling leaves and crispy edges.

  • Reduce watering slightly during cooler months.

Humidity

  • Thrives in 60–80% humidity.

  • Benefits from a humidifier or placement in naturally humid environments.

  • Low humidity may cause brown leaf tips, curling or dry leaf margins.

  • Maintain good airflow to discourage fungal problems.

Temperature

  • Ideal growing temperatures are 20–30°C.

  • Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15°C, as cold conditions can damage foliage and slow growth.

Soil

  • Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix containing premium potting mix, coco coir, perlite and fine orchid bark.

  • The growing medium should retain sufficient moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.

  • Good root aeration helps prevent waterlogging and root rot.

Fertilising

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during the active growing season (spring–summer).

  • Use a diluted application to avoid fertiliser burn and salt accumulation.

  • Reduce or suspend feeding during winter when growth naturally slows.

Growth Habit & Support

  • Naturally grows as an upright, clumping tropical perennial, producing new shoots from underground rhizomes.

  • Can reach approximately 60–120 cm tall under favourable growing conditions.

  • Does not require a moss pole or climbing support.

  • Benefits from occasional removal of damaged or ageing foliage to maintain a tidy, bushy appearance.

  • Like other members of the prayer plant family, its leaves may display subtle daily movement in response to changing light conditions.
