Description

Dieffenbachia maculata ‘Reflector’ is a striking tropical foliage plant prized for its vivid, high-contrast variegation. The broad, lance-shaped leaves are a deep glossy green, heavily speckled and mottled with bright lime to yellow patterning that appears almost luminous under the right lighting conditions. This “reflective” effect gives the cultivar its name and makes it a standout in indoor plant ranges.

The plant grows in a compact, upright clumping habit with thick, cane-like stems. Compared to older Dieffenbachia varieties, ‘Reflector’ is more refined in form and colour, making it highly desirable for retail. It performs well indoors but, like most variegated aroids, requires stable conditions to maintain leaf quality and colour intensity.

Care Plan

Light

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal

  • Tolerates medium light but with reduced colour intensity

  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch and bleach the foliage

Watering

  • Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged

  • Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry slightly between watering

  • Reduce frequency in cooler months

Humidity

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity (60%+ ideal)

  • Will tolerate average indoor humidity but may develop brown edges if too dry

  • Benefits from improved humidity in warmer conditions

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 18–28°C

  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C

  • Protect from cold drafts and sudden changes

Soil

  • Use a well-draining, airy potting mix

  • A blend of potting mix, perlite, and bark works well

  • Slightly acidic to neutral pH preferred

Fertilising

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during active growth

  • Reduce feeding in cooler months

  • Avoid overfertilising to prevent leaf burn

Maintenance

  • Remove older or damaged leaves to maintain appearance

  • Wipe leaves occasionally to keep foliage clean and glossy

  • Prune to control height or encourage bushier growth
