Drynaria rigidula var. whitei
Drynaria rigidula var. whitei, a variation of the well-known Drynaria rigidula (commonly called the Basket Fern). This epiphytic fern is admired for its striking foliage and its ability to adapt to both mounted and potted cultivation.
Description
Drynaria rigidula var. whitei features two distinct types of fronds:
-
Sterile fronds: These are brown, rounded, and form a basal rosette that helps the plant retain moisture and organic debris, much like a nest.
-
Fertile fronds: These are long, upright, and deeply lobed, creating a dramatic, architectural appearance. The fronds can reach significant lengths and often develop a leathery texture.
This fern thrives in warm, humid conditions and naturally grows attached to tree trunks or rocks, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and debris around its rhizome.
Care Plan
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled sunlight. Can tolerate some morning sun but should be protected from intense midday rays.
-
Water: Requires regular watering, but the growing medium should dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to rhizome rot.
-
Humidity: High humidity (above 60%) is ideal. Regular misting or placement in a humid environment will encourage healthy growth.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures between 18–30°C. Avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C.
-
Substrate: Best grown mounted on a tree slab, cork bark, or in a well-draining epiphytic mix with sphagnum moss.
-
Fertilisation: Benefits from a diluted liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the growing season. Organic fertilisers like fish emulsion can also promote lush growth.
