Drynaria quercifolia var. whitei is a striking epiphytic fern known for its unique frond structure and ability to thrive in warm, humid environments. This variety is a variant of Drynaria quercifolia, commonly called the Oak Leaf Fern, but with distinguishing features that may include more pronounced frond shapes or subtle variations in colouration.

Description

Drynaria quercifolia var. whitei features two distinct types of fronds:

  • Sterile fronds: These are brown, shield-like structures that form around the base of the plant, helping to retain moisture and organic debris.

  • Fertile fronds: These are long, deeply lobed, and resemble oak leaves, giving the plant its common name. They grow outward and upward, creating a dramatic and textured display.

This fern is often found growing on tree trunks, rocks, or in well-aerated organic matter, absorbing moisture and nutrients from its surroundings.

Care Plan

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled sunlight. Avoid direct harsh sun, which may scorch the fronds.

  • Water: Requires consistent moisture but should not sit in soggy conditions. Mist regularly or water when the substrate starts to dry out.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (above 60%). Ideal for tropical environments or indoor spaces with humidity control.

  • Temperature: Best kept in warm temperatures between 18–30°C. Avoid exposure to cold drafts.

  • Substrate: Grows best on tree bark, well-draining orchid mix, or sphagnum moss if cultivated in a container.

  • Fertilisation: Benefits from occasional feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
