Homalomena rubescens Marshmallow- Bare Bottom Baby
Homalomena rubescens ‘Marshmallow’
Homalomena rubescens ‘Marshmallow’ is a rare and striking tropical plant known for its soft, pastel-toned foliage. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves display a unique blend of creamy white, blush pink, and soft green hues, creating a delicate and elegant appearance. The plant has a compact, bushy growth habit, making it an excellent choice for indoor collections or shaded garden spaces. Like other Homalomena species, ‘Marshmallow’ is prized for its resilience and ability to thrive in warm, humid conditions.
Care Plan
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate variegation, while low light may cause fading of the colours.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (above 60%). If humidity is too low, leaf edges may brown—using a humidifier or misting can help maintain ideal conditions.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–30°C. Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Soil: A well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix with peat, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal. Good aeration helps prevent root rot.
Fertilising: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Ensure the new pot has drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.
