Homalomena sulcata ‘Cream Frost’ – Description

Homalomena sulcata ‘Cream Frost’ is a striking, self-heading aroid prized for its heavily textured stems and soft, marbled variegation. The broad, heart-shaped leaves display a mix of creamy white, pale green, and mid-green tones, often with a frosted or brushed appearance that gives the cultivar its name. Each leaf is unique, with variegation patterns that can range from subtle mottling to bold sectoral patches.

The species name sulcata refers to the deeply grooved (sulcate) petioles, a defining structural feature that adds architectural interest even when the plant is not in leaf. Compact and clumping in habit, this variety does not climb, making it ideal for indoor collections, shaded patios, or feature planting in warm climates.

Care Plan – Homalomena sulcata ‘Cream Frost’

Light
Bright, indirect light is essential to maintain strong growth and stable variegation. Tolerates medium light, but variegation may reduce. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch pale areas.

Water
Keep soil evenly moist but well drained. Allow the top 2–3 cm of the substrate to dry between waterings. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root or stem rot.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Performs well in average indoor conditions but benefits from added humidity, especially during warmer months.

Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 18–28 °C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.

Soil / Substrate
Use a free-draining, moisture-retentive aroid mix. A blend of premium potting mix, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well.

Fertiliser
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 2–4 weeks during the active growing season. Reduce feeding in cooler months.

Growth Habit
Self-heading and clumping. Slow to moderate growth rate, particularly in variegated forms.
