Labisia beccarii Turtle Back - Bare Bottom Baby
Description:
Labisia beccarii, commonly known as the 'Turtle Back' plant, is a rare and exotic tropical plant that hails from the rainforests of Southeast Asia, specifically Borneo. It is admired for its unique and striking leaf pattern, resembling the shell of a turtle. The leaves are glossy, thick, and feature a distinctive venation with dark green colouring and lighter, intricate veins that create the "turtle back" effect. This small, slow-growing plant is often prized by plant collectors for its unusual and attractive foliage. It remains relatively compact, making it ideal for terrariums or as a unique houseplant.
Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies. The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.
Care Plan:
- Light: Prefers low to moderate indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the leaves to burn and lose their vibrant pattern.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry. It appreciates high humidity, so misting or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with water can help maintain moisture.
- Humidity: This plant thrives in high humidity (60-80%). A humidifier or regular misting will keep the plant happy, especially if growing indoors.
- Temperature: Best kept in temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. It is sensitive to cold and should be kept away from drafts or temperatures below 15°C.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, loose, and slightly acidic potting mix. A combination of peat, perlite, and orchid bark can create a suitable growing medium.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, preferably in a slightly larger container.
