Monstera borsigiana Aurea
Monstera borsigiana ‘Aurea’ is a striking variegated form of Monstera borsigiana, distinguished by its golden-yellow variegation that contrasts beautifully against its deep green foliage. This cultivar is often mistaken for Monstera deliciosa, but it has a more compact growth habit and smaller internodal spacing, making it an excellent choice for indoor collections. The variegation appears in a mix of marbling, sectoral patterns, and speckling, with each leaf developing unique colour variations.
Though its growth rate is generally fast, its variegation can impact the speed of development, especially in lower light conditions. Like other Monsteras, it develops fenestrations (natural leaf splits) as it matures, creating a striking tropical appearance.
Care Plan
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain healthy variegation. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out before watering. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (60%+), though it can tolerate lower levels with occasional misting or a nearby humidifier.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C.
Soil: Use a well-draining, airy mix with peat, perlite, and orchid bark to promote healthy root growth.
Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce feeding in cooler months.
Support: As a climbing plant, it benefits from a moss pole or trellis to encourage larger leaves and stronger growth.
