Description: Monstera borsigiana Aurea is a striking, variegated plant from the Araceae family, known for its large, heart-shaped leaves that display stunning yellow (aurea) and green marbling. The variegation in this plant creates a striking contrast, with the aurea patches being more subtle and understated compared to other variegated Monstera varieties like the Albo. The leaves of Monstera borsigiana Aurea are typically split with fenestrations (natural holes) as the plant matures, contributing to its iconic tropical appearance.

Monstera borsigiana is a sub-variety of Monstera deliciosa, but it has a slightly more compact and faster-growing habit. The Aurea version is prized for its unique, golden variegation, which appears in a marbled or sectoral pattern.

Care Plan:

1. Light:

  • Optimal: Bright, indirect light. It thrives in well-lit conditions but should be kept out of direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate, variegated leaves.
  • Tolerable: Lower light conditions, though growth may slow, and the variegation might fade over time in insufficient light.

2. Watering:

  • Frequency: Water when the top 2–5 cm of the soil is dry to the touch.
  • Method: Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom, but ensure the plant is not left sitting in water, as it is prone to root rot.
  • Tip: Use filtered water or allow tap water to sit for 24 hours to let chlorine evaporate, which can prevent leaf browning.

3. Humidity:

  • Optimal: 60–80% humidity. This tropical plant loves high humidity.
  • Tolerable: Will tolerate lower humidity (40–50%) but might develop brown leaf edges.
  • Tip: Mist the leaves occasionally or place a humidifier nearby for optimal growth.

4. Temperature:

  • Optimal: 18–27°C. Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 10°C, as it is sensitive to cold drafts.
  • Tip: Keep away from heating or cooling vents to prevent sudden temperature changes.

5. Soil:

  • Type: Well-draining aroid mix that contains perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir. This mix ensures good aeration for the roots and prevents water retention.
  • Tip: Adding charcoal to the mix can improve drainage and prevent fungal growth.

6. Fertiliser:

  • Frequency: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilise once every 4–6 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser.
