Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a stunning tropical climbing plant admired for its large, glossy, deep green leaves and distinctive natural splits and holes, known as fenestrations. As the plant matures, its foliage becomes larger and develops more intricate splits, creating a lush, tropical appearance. Native to the rainforests of Central America, this vigorous grower uses aerial roots to climb trees and other supports. Its impressive foliage, easy-care nature and adaptability make it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Care Plan

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and larger, more fenestrated leaves. Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may slow. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 30°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C, as prolonged exposure to cold can damage the plant.

  • Watering: Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains freely. Avoid overwatering or allowing the plant to sit in water, as this can lead to root rot.

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity levels of 50–70%, although it can adapt to average household conditions. Higher humidity encourages healthy foliage development and supports aerial root growth.

  • Soil: A well-draining, airy aroid potting mix is ideal. A combination of quality potting mix, orchid bark, perlite and coco chips provides good aeration while retaining sufficient moisture for healthy root development.

  • Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during cooler months when growth naturally slows.

  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with adequate drainage holes and avoid increasing the pot size too dramatically.

  • Additional Information: Monstera deliciosa is a natural climber and benefits from a moss pole, totem or sturdy support. Providing vertical support encourages larger, more mature foliage with pronounced fenestrations. Its aerial roots can be guided towards the support to assist climbing.

With its spectacular foliage and relatively low-maintenance nature, Monstera deliciosa is a timeless indoor plant that brings a beautiful tropical atmosphere to any space. Given the right conditions, it will reward plant lovers with vigorous growth and increasingly impressive leaves as it matures.
