Monstera karstenianum Peru
Monstera Peru (botanically Monstera karstenianum) is a compact, climbing aroid admired for its thick, textured foliage. Unlike the more familiar fenestrated Monsteras, this species has glossy, dark green leaves with a unique corrugated surface and no natural splits or holes. The veining gives it a deep, almost quilted appearance that catches the light beautifully. It's a great choice for those who love bold foliage and want a lower-maintenance Monstera alternative.
Despite its name, it's not native only to Peru—it’s found in various parts of Central and South America—but the common name likely refers to its popularity or distribution.
Care Plan (Australian Conditions):
-
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light but may grow more slowly. Avoid harsh direct sunlight which can scorch its leaves. -
Water:
Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. This plant prefers slightly moist soil but is sensitive to overwatering. -
Humidity:
Thrives in medium to high humidity (50%+). Will benefit from occasional misting or being placed near a humidifier. -
Temperature:
Keep in a warm spot between 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 12°C. -
Soil:
A free-draining, chunky aroid mix works best. A blend of potting mix, perlite, and orchid bark will help prevent root rot. -
Fertiliser:
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring through early autumn). Pause feeding in winter. -
Growth Habit:
A natural climber that benefits from a moss pole or trellis. With support and time, it will reward you with faster growth and larger leaves.
