Philodendron domesticum variegata
Philodendron domesticum variegata, also known as the Variegated Spadeleaf Philodendron, is a striking tropical plant prized for its large, elongated, spade-shaped leaves that are beautifully splashed with creamy white or yellow variegation. This climbing philodendron can grow impressively large, making it an excellent statement piece for any indoor plant collection. Its variegation adds a dynamic look to the classic, lush green foliage, and it tends to develop long, graceful stems that can be trained to climb or cascade.
Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, the Philodendron domesticum variegata brings a touch of the exotic to indoor spaces. As with many variegated plants, it requires a bit more light than its fully green counterparts to maintain its unique colouring.
Care Plan:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant variegation. It can tolerate lower light levels but may lose some of its variegation if kept in too much shade. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
-
Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Philodendrons prefer consistently moist (but not waterlogged) soil. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
-
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity, ideally 50-60%. If the air is too dry, mist the plant or use a humidifier to maintain healthy leaves.
-
Temperature: Likes warmth! Keep it in temperatures between 18-27°C. It doesn’t tolerate cold well, so avoid exposing it to temperatures below 15°C.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a combination of peat, perlite, and orchid bark. This ensures good aeration and prevents the roots from sitting in water.
-
Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
