Philodendron erubescens White Princess
Description
Philodendron erubescens ‘White Princess’ is a refined and elegant variegated aroid, prized for its crisp white markings and compact, upright growth habit. Unlike broader-leaved or heavily lobed philodendrons, ‘White Princess’ maintains a more structured form, with elongated, slightly pointed leaves emerging on slender, upright stems.
The foliage displays a beautiful contrast of deep green and bright white variegation, ranging from fine speckling to bold sectoral patches. One of its distinguishing traits is the green stems with subtle pink to burgundy edging at the nodes and petiole sheaths, separating it from similar cultivars like ‘White Knight’ (which has darker stems) and ‘White Wizard’ (which lacks pink tones).
New leaves often emerge with soft, pale variegation that intensifies as they mature. Growth is relatively compact compared to other erubescens types, making it well suited for indoor collections where space is limited but visual impact is desired.
Care Plan
Light
Bright, indirect light is key to maintaining strong white variegation. Too little light can cause the plant to revert to greener foliage, while direct sun may burn the white sections.
Watering
Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry between waterings. Keep evenly moist but never soggy. Ensure excess water drains freely to prevent root issues.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity (60%+). While adaptable, higher humidity encourages larger leaves and more stable variegation.
Temperature
Ideal range is 18–28°C. Avoid cold exposure below 12°C and protect from sudden temperature fluctuations.
Soil
Use a well-draining aroid mix. A combination of potting mix, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat works well to balance moisture retention and airflow.
Fertilising
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.
