Philodendron giganteum Blizzard is a stunning variegated variety of the already impressive Philodendron giganteum. This plant is known for its massive, glossy green leaves, which are splashed with striking white or cream variegation. The foliage can grow up to 1 metre long, creating a bold, tropical statement in any space. The variegation on the leaves can vary, with some leaves displaying more subtle streaks, while others exhibit a more dramatic marbling effect. Its large, heart-shaped leaves and fast-growing nature make it a favourite among collectors who appreciate rare, show-stopping plants.

Care Plan for Philodendron giganteum Blizzard:

Light:

  • Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain the variegation. Exposure to direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause the variegation to fade.
  • In lower light, the plant may still grow, but it will lose some of its vibrancy and leaf size.

Watering:

  • Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Reduce watering frequency in the cooler months when the plant's growth slows down. Ensure that excess water drains out to avoid root rot.

Humidity:

  • Thrives in high humidity, ideally around 60-80%. If the surrounding environment is dry, increase humidity by misting regularly, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray.
  • Higher humidity will encourage faster growth and larger leaves.

Temperature:

  • Keep in warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, as the plant is sensitive to cold.
  • Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil:

  • Use a well-draining, airy potting mix like an aroid mix, which typically includes peat, perlite, and orchid bark. This allows for proper drainage while retaining enough moisture for the roots.

Fertilising:

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertiliser should be diluted to half strength to prevent burning the roots.
  • Reduce fertilising in autumn and winter.
