Philodendron pedatum 'Florida Ghost' - Bare Bottom Baby
Philodendron pedatum 'Florida Ghost' is a highly sought-after aroid known for its distinctive and ever-changing foliage. This cultivar, often referred to simply as 'Florida Ghost,' features uniquely shaped leaves that start out as a creamy white or pale green when they first unfurl, gradually transitioning to a darker green as they mature. The new leaves resemble a ghostly silhouette, hence the name. The plant's lobed, finger-like leaves give it an elegant, almost sculptural appearance, making it a striking addition to any plant collection. As a climbing Philodendron, 'Florida Ghost' can be trained to grow on a support, where it will display its dramatic foliage to full effect.
Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies. The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.
Care Plan for Philodendron pedatum 'Florida Ghost':
Light:
- Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its unique leaf colouring. It can tolerate medium light, but the variegation may be less pronounced. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the delicate new leaves to burn.
Watering:
- Water when the top 2-3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. The soil should be kept consistently moist but never soggy. Ensure that the pot has good drainage to prevent water from sitting at the roots, which can cause rot.
Humidity:
- Thrives in high humidity, ideally around 60-80%. If the air is too dry, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to increase humidity levels.
Temperature:
- Prefers temperatures between 18-27°C . Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Soil:
- A well-draining, chunky aroid mix is ideal. You can use a mix of potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of peat moss or coco coir to provide both moisture retention and aeration.
Fertilisation:
- Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). In the cooler months, reduce feeding as the plant's growth slows.
Pruning:
- Prune as needed to control the plant's size and shape, and to encourage bushier growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance.
Repotting:
- Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. When repotting, choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one, and refresh the potting mix to keep the plant healthy.
