Philodendron spiritus-sancti

Philodendron spiritus-sancti is one of the most iconic and coveted aroids in the world. Native to Espírito Santo in Brazil, this rare species is instantly recognisable by its long, narrow, pendant leaves with deeply lobed bases that give it a striking and elegant silhouette. Mature specimens can produce leaves over 90 cm long, suspended from slender petioles, creating a graceful, almost ethereal appearance.

Due to habitat loss, Philodendron spiritus-sancti is critically endangered in the wild and is primarily grown in cultivation by collectors and botanical institutions. It’s a true gem for serious plant enthusiasts and a centrepiece in any rare plant collection.

Care Plan

Light:
Bright, indirect light is essential. Avoid direct sun, which can burn the delicate foliage. Too little light may cause leggy growth.

Water:
Water thoroughly when the top 3–5 cm of the soil becomes dry. It prefers consistent moisture but must not sit in soggy soil.

Humidity:
Loves high humidity (ideally above 70%). A humidity dome, grow tent, or dedicated humidifier is recommended in drier environments.

Temperature:
Prefers warm, stable conditions between 20–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Soil:
Use a very well-draining aroid mix: a combination of orchid bark, perlite, sphagnum moss, and high-quality potting mix works well. The roots prefer airflow and moisture balance.

Fertiliser:
Feed monthly during the growing season with a gentle, balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Do not over-fertilise.

Growth Habit:
A climbing species that benefits from a moss pole or support. Given the right care, it will produce impressively long, elegant foliage.

I have brought 3 plants and they have arrived healthy and packaged really good with very little damage from one plant of the leaves rubbing on the packaging but won't affect plant growth and my other 2 plant purchases have had no damage to plants on arrival.
