Philodendron squamicaule is a striking tropical aroid known for its elongated, velvety green leaves and distinctive petioles covered in fine, reddish bristles. Native to Central and South America, this species thrives in humid rainforest environments. Its unique petioles give it a textured, almost fuzzy appearance, making it a standout addition to any aroid collection. As a climbing philodendron, it benefits from a support structure such as a moss pole or trellis to encourage healthy growth.

Care Plan

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. It can tolerate lower light but may grow more slowly.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (above 60%). If the air is dry, consider misting the plant or using a humidifier.

Temperature: Grows best in warm conditions, ideally between 18–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C.

Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir to provide aeration and moisture retention.

Fertilising: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.

Support: Provide a moss pole or trellis to encourage climbing and larger leaf development.
