Piper betle Var Nigra, commonly known as the Black Betel Leaf, is a unique and exotic variety of Piper betle. This plant is distinguished by its dark, almost black leaves, which provide a striking contrast to the more common green varieties. Native to tropical regions, Piper betle Var Nigra is admired for its glossy, heart-shaped foliage and its aromatic properties..

Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies.  The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.

Care Plan:

  1. Light: Piper betle Var Nigra prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may not grow as vigorously. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and affect their colour.

  2. Watering: Water the plant when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Ensure that the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering slightly as the plant's growth slows down.

  3. Humidity: This plant thrives in high humidity. Aim for humidity levels around 60% or higher. To maintain the right humidity, use a humidifier, place the plant on a humidity tray, or mist the leaves regularly.

  4. Temperature: Keep Piper betle Var Nigra in a warm environment, ideally between 18°C and 27°C. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant.

  5. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This mix provides good aeration and helps prevent water from pooling around the roots.

  6. Fertilising: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising during the winter months when growth slows.

  7. Repotting: Repot Piper betle Var Nigra every 1-2 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 2-5 cm larger in diameter than the current one to accommodate the plant's growth.
