Scindapsus treubii ‘Black Dove’ is a highly sought-after cultivar known for its dramatic, thick foliage and near-black coloration. The leaves are elongated and slightly heart-shaped, with a leathery texture and a deep charcoal to almost black surface that can show subtle green undertones in brighter light. This dark pigmentation intensifies as the plant matures and is one of the defining features that sets ‘Black Dove’ apart from other Scindapsus treubii forms such as ‘Moonlight’.

This cultivar is a slow to moderate grower and naturally exhibits a climbing habit. When provided with vertical support, Scindapsus treubii ‘Black Dove’ produces larger, more structured foliage, making it an excellent choice for collectors seeking bold contrast and a refined, architectural aesthetic.

Care Plan

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal to maintain the deep leaf colour and support steady growth. It will tolerate medium light but may grow more slowly and appear greener. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Water

Allow the top 3–5 cm of the growing medium to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Overwatering should be avoided, as this species is prone to root rot in dense or constantly wet media.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity (60% or higher). While it can adapt to average indoor humidity, higher humidity encourages healthier growth and larger leaves.

Temperature

Best grown between 18–28 °C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15 °C and protect from cold drafts.

Growing Medium

Use a free-draining, chunky aroid mix. A combination of premium potting mix, orchid bark, perlite, and coco peat or coir provides both moisture retention and airflow around the roots.

Fertiliser

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 3–4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or cease feeding during winter.

Support

A moss pole or support is recommended. Vertical growth promotes larger, more mature foliage and improves overall plant structure.

Pruning and Maintenance

Minimal pruning is required. Remove damaged or ageing leaves as needed. Occasional leaf cleaning helps maintain appearance and photosynthetic efficiency.
