Syngonium podophyllum Red Spot - Bare Bottom Baby
The Syngonium Red Spot is a striking variety of the Syngonium plant, known for its vibrant, uniquely variegated leaves. The foliage is primarily green with splashes of pink, ranging from soft blush tones to deep, rich reds. These variegated patterns give the plant a distinctive and attractive appearance, making it a popular choice for indoor gardening enthusiasts. The Syngonium Red Spot typically grows as a compact, bushy plant, but with age, it can develop a climbing or trailing habit, making it versatile for various indoor settings.
Please note: These plants have been grown in seedling plug trays and therefore the root systems will not be as fully established as a larger pot size and will require extra attention. Plants are on average 5cm in length and photos on the website are indicative only. Please take this into consideration with each purchase of the Bare Bottom Babies. The dispatch team always pick the best plants that are available.
1. Light Requirements
- Indirect Light: Syngonium Red Spot thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but this may result in reduced variegation. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and fade the vibrant colours.
- Rotation: Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth and to prevent the leaves from leaning towards the light source.
2. Watering
- Moderate Watering: Water the plant when the top 2-3 cm of the soil feels dry to the touch. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Water Quality: Use room temperature water, ideally filtered or left out overnight to reduce chlorine and fluoride, which can cause leaf browning.
- Humidity: Syngoniums prefer higher humidity levels. Mist the plant regularly, or place it near a humidifier or on a tray with water and pebbles to maintain moisture.
3. Soil and Potting
- Well-Draining Soil: Use a light, well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for aroids or a mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark.
- Pot Size: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom. Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its current pot.
4. Fertilising
- Balanced Fertiliser: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Rest Period: Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months when the plant's growth slows down.
5. Temperature
- Optimal Range: Maintain a temperature range between 18-27°C. Syngonium Red Spot does not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C.
